(Spoiler: You’re probably going to want to do it again.)

Let me start by saying this: If you’ve ever been curious about SCUBA diving — even just a passing “I wonder what it’s like down there” — you owe it to yourself to try it at least once. And I don’t say that as someone who works in the dive industry. I say that as someone who still remembers my first breath underwater like it happened yesterday.

I’ll never forget kneeling in the shallow end of the pool, mask on, regulator in, heart pounding like a drum. I wasn’t scared, exactly — just wide open. Unsure. Curious. A little intimidated. (Let’s be real — wearing 40 pounds of gear to go swimming does feel a bit ridiculous at first.)

But then I inhaled. And… it worked. I breathed.
Underwater.

Just like that, something in my brain rewired. The noise in my head quieted down. I wasn’t thinking about anything else — not work, not life, not my phone. It was just me, my breath, and the surreal calm of a world I never knew I needed.

Here’s what nobody tells you before your first breath:

It doesn’t feel like swimming. It feels like flying.
You’re weightless, suspended, moving slowly and deliberately — like you’re part of the water, not fighting against it.

You don’t need to be super fit. You don’t need to be brave. You just need to be open to a new experience. That’s it.

And we’re not tossing you into the ocean right away — Try SCUBA at Tri-City SCUBA takes place in a safe, controlled environment, with one of our instructors right by your side the entire time. You can stand up whenever you want. You’re in control.

But what if I’m nervous?

Good. That means you’re paying attention.
Every single diver I know started out nervous. That’s normal — and honestly, kind of important. It keeps you aware, focused, and respectful of the water.

But it doesn’t last long. Once you realize how safe and supportive the experience is, the nerves turn into wonder pretty quickly.

You’ll finish the session feeling proud. Empowered. A little taller. Like maybe you’ve tapped into a version of yourself that’s been waiting to show up.

So, what’s next?

Honestly? That’s up to you.

Some people try it once and check it off their bucket list. Awesome. Others leave their first session already planning their Open Water certification and watching dive videos before bed. Also awesome.

But one thing’s for sure — you won’t forget the first time you breathe underwater.
